When your designing your website its very important to make sure your website is optimized for search engines as this is key to making your website a success to ranking on major search engines such as Google.
I’ve build alot of websites and have learnt alot on the way and id like to share my experience with other webmasters starting out on their website so i have put together this article on the steps to achieve a well optimised website.
Step 1
Pick a domain name that is relvant to your niche and have at least 1 keyword that matches your niche. For example take my domain name for example my niche is “internet marketing” and i have my keyword in my domain name. This helps search engines understand what your domain relates to and will also help with rankings as when a user does a serach for “internet marketing” my domain name matches the users search critiera
Step 2
Setting up your meta tags for your website. Meta tags are tags that are hiden within your site so when search engine bots crawl your site the first thing they check for are your meta tags. Meta tags are bits of information that tell search engines about your website, as an example this is what they look like:
<title>enter the title of your website here</title>
<META Name=”keywords” Content=”keyword 1, keyword2, keyword3, keyword4,keyword5, etc“>
<META Name=”description” Content=”Write a short paragraph about your website here“>
<META name=”author” content=”Write your name here“>
<META NAME=”ROBOTS” CONTENT=”ALL“>
<META NAME=”REVISIT-AFTER” CONTENT=”How often you want search engines to crawl your site, i would say every 1 days if your site is updated daily“>
<meta name=”distribution” content=”global“>
<meta name=”rating” content=”Safe For Kids“/>
<meta name=”robots” content=”index,follow“/>
You must place your meta tags on your home page (index) towards the top of the page so search engines can find it easily
Step 3
When you start adding your pages you should also make sure when you name the pages is to make sure to name your page a keyword that matches the content on that page for example www.domainname.com/keyword.htm. And also make sure the title of the page has a couple of keywords that match the content of your page. As when your pages get indexed on search engines, search engines will match your page name and title to a users request which helps with your rankings.
Step 4
When writing your content make sure the content is unique and not copied or duplicated from anywhere on the internet as Google is now starting to penilise websites with duplicate content as they are stamping down on spam. Also make sure you add some of your keywords within your content that match the title of your page and page name as mentioned in step 3
Step 5
Another good tip is to have H1 titles on all your pages. H1 title headers are a size font within your software. So for all your pages i recommended having a H1 title towards the top off all your pages.
Step 6
Another good tip is to have your keywords set as anchor links that point to inner pages on your website. For example on your home page for some of your keywords within your content you can have Anchor links that point to inner pages within your website. Google likes this as it makes navigation within your website easy for users and for search engine bots. The code for setting anchor links are as follows:
<a href=http://www.yourdomainname.com/innerpage.htm>Your keyword word anchor link</a>
Step 7
Its very important to have a site map on your website which helps users find pages within your site and also helps search engines that are crawling your site find all your web pages. If you can put a sitemap on the footer of all pages that is accessable for both reader and search bots.
Step 8
Another good idea is to make sure your website is updated regulary with unique content as search engines pay attention to websites that are updated regulary with unique content. Make sure that the content is unique and not copied from anywhere else. A good idea is to add a wordpress blog to your website and add new articles everyday related to your website niche. Having a blog greatly improves your rankings and you may also get repeat visitors if your articles are very informative. Or another good feature to add to your website is a forum, as users will add new content for you automatically and brings back repeat visitors.
Step 9
Adding images and video content to your website. Google likes websites that have media content like images and videos. Also make sure that you tag your images and videos with your keywords. For your images use the “alt tag” which tells google that your images are related to your keywords. Alt tags look like this:
<img src=”imagename.jpg” height=”100″ width=”100″ alt=”keyword here“>
On your embed or uploaded videos Google will pick up on the content around your videos and match that video to any keywords around the video. If you embed youtube videos, a good idea is to tag your keywords on youtube and write a good informative description on your video and place your URL in the description.
Step 10
Make sure that the navigation around your website is easy for users to find information on your website. For example having links to inner pages around your website down the left or right hand side, on the top and at the bottom of your website so to make it easy for users to navigate around your website.
